The X–ray Source at the Center of the Cassiopeia A Supernova Remnant
نویسنده
چکیده
We present the first results of an XMM-Newton observation of the central X– ray source in the Cas A supernova remnant. The spectrum can be fit equally well with an absorbed steep power law (αph=3.01 +0.27 −0.24, NH=(1.64 +0.29 −0.24)×10 22 cm) or with a blackbody of temperature kT= 0.70±0.05 keV and column density NH=(0.53 +0.14 −0.12)×10 22 cm. A search for pulsations for periods longer than 150 ms gave negative results. The 3σ upper limits on the pulsed fraction are ∼13% for P>0.3 s and ∼7% for P>3 s. The overall properties of the central X–ray source in Cas A are difficult to explain in terms of a rapidly spinning neutron star with a canonical magnetic field of ∼10 G, and are more similar to those of slowly rotating neutron stars such as the Anomalous X–ray Pulsars. Near-infrared and Optical Limits for the Central X-ray Point Source in the Cassiopeia a Supernova Remnant
We set new near-infrared and optical magnitude limits for the central X-ray point source (XPS) in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant based on HST images. Near-infrared images of the center of Cas A taken with the NICMOS 2 camera in combination with the F110W and F160W filters (∼ J and H bands) have magnitude limits ≥26.2 and ≥24.6, respectively. These images reveal no sources within a 1. 2 radi...
متن کاملSmall-scale X-ray Variability in the Cassiopeia a Supernova Remnant
A comparison of X-ray observations of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant taken in 2000, 2002, and 2004 with the Chandra ACIS-S3 reveals the presence of several small scale features (≤ 10) which exhibit significant intensity changes over a 4 year time frame. Here we report on the variability of six features, four of which show count rate increases from ∼ 10% to over 90%, and two which show decre...
متن کاملUpper Limits on Periodic, Pulsed Radio Emission from the X-ray Point Source in Cassiopeia A
The Chandra X-ray Observatory recently discovered an X-ray point source near the center of Cassiopeia A, the youngest known Galactic supernova remnant. We have conducted a sensitive search for radio pulsations from this source with the Very Large Array, taking advantage of the high angular resolution of the array to resolve out the emission from the remnant itself. No convincing signatures of a...
متن کاملObservation of VHE γ-rays from Cassiopeia A with the MAGIC telescope
Aims. We searched for very high energy (VHE) γ-ray emission from the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A Methods. The shell-type supernova remnant Cassiopeia A was observed with the 17 meter MAGIC telescope between July 2006 and January 2007 for a total time of 47 hours. Results. The source was detected above an energy of 250 GeV with a significance of 5.2 σ and a photon flux above 1 TeV of (7.3±0.7...
متن کاملSearch for an Near-ir Counterpart to the Cas a X-ray Point Source
We report deep near-infrared and optical observations of the X-ray point source in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant, CXO J232327.9+584842. We have identified a J = 21.4 ± 0.3 mag and K s = 20.5 ± 0.3 mag source within the 1-σ error circle, but we believe this source is a foreground Pop II star with T eff = 2600–2800 K at a distance of ≈ 2 kpc, which could not be the X-ray point source. We do ...
